Club History

A Brief History
While football and hurling were played in Spa Parish since the formative years of the GAA it was 1915 before the Churchill Football Club was first registered. The records tell us that in that year Churchill travelled by train to play Dingle and on 10th July 1917 they again travelled by train to play Lispole.

At that time the club’s playing pitch was at Ballymacagogue. In 1932 Churchill won the Intermediate Championship but were runners up in the 1934 final. In the 1930s the club became known as the Churchill Pearse Brothers and their adopted colours were green and black.

During the 1930s and 1940s the club participated in the Tralee District League. A very popular feature in those years was the local parish leagues with teams from Spa Parish.

Churchill, Fenit, The Kerries and occasionally Ballyroe participated. A healthy rivalry ensured that games were exciting and played to the highest standard.

When St Brendan’s District Football Board was formed in 1950 Churchill participated successfully at Senior, Minor and Juvenile level in the Board’s competitions.

In the 1960s the club got a new lease of life when a talented group of young players under the astute management of more senior members had great success. Having won Senior and Minor District League Finals the club proceeded to win the Novice County Championship in 1972.

In 1973 the club contested the Junior Championship and were unlucky to be beaten in the final. Those teams included three players who were to represent Kerry with distinction.

The year 2009 was another golden year for the club. Having achieved promotion from Division 5 the club again won the Novice County Championship and also the Munster Novice Championship. These achievements were a source of great pride for all involved.

Realising the importance of having a progressive juvenile policy the club have at all times been proactive in fostering and promoting our games at underage level. Churchill is recognised as having one of the best Juvenile structures in the County. This is in no small part due to the hard work and endless dedication of our primary school teachers and loyal mentors. In 2000 our under 14 team participated in the All Ireland Féile Competition. Having defeated some of the premium clubs in the country they advanced to the All-Ireland semi final where they were narrowly defeated.

Culture and Heritage
In conformance with the GAA’s policy on Culture and Heritage the club has actively participated in “Scór” each year since its foundation in 1969. The club won many County Finals and in recent years won All Ireland titles in Tráth na gCeist. The club also participates in Scór na bPáistí and Scór competitions which encourages people who may not necessarily be good at games to be actively involved in the club and develop other talents.
